Work Permit

Employer-specific or open permits to build Canadian experience.

2 weeks to 6 months, plus LMIA time $155 permit fee (+$100 open permit holder fee)

Overview

Work permits fall into two families. Employer-specific permits usually need a Labour Market Impact Assessment or an LMIA-exempt category such as intra-company transfers, CUSMA professionals or the Global Talent Stream. Open permits — post-graduation, spousal, and bridging — let you work for almost any employer.

What you need

  • A valid job offer plus LMIA, or a qualifying LMIA-exempt category
  • Proof you meet the occupation's licensing or experience requirements
  • Evidence you will leave Canada at the end of authorised stay
  • Biometrics and, in some cases, a medical exam

How the process runs

  1. 1

    Confirm the category

Determine whether the role needs an LMIA or falls under an exemption.

  2. 2

    Employer preparation

The employer secures the LMIA or submits an offer of employment through the portal.

  3. 3

    Apply

Submit the permit application with the offer, credentials and fee.

  4. 4

    Bridge to PR

Use the Canadian work experience for the Canadian Experience Class or a provincial stream.
